What YouVersion does well
- It's free, all of it. No subscription, and a very large library.
- Translations. Thousands of versions and languages, including the NIV, ESV and NLT, which public-domain apps can't offer.
- Reading plans. A large catalog of plans and devotionals, completed hundreds of millions of times.
- Audio. Listen in many versions, online or off.
When YouVersion is the better choice
- You read the NIV, ESV or another licensed translation and don't want to switch.
- You want guided plans, devotionals and audio more than a marked-up text.
- You don't want to pay anything, ever.
Why people choose Cloud Bible
It treats highlighting as the point
Cloud Bible is built for people who read with a pen in hand. Each of the six highlighters can be renamed ("Promise", "Do this"), the Study screen lists every verse under each name, and underlines sit on their own layer so two simple systems can run at once. If you've ever kept a color key in the front of a Bible, that's the idea.
Your paper Bible comes with you
Years of highlights in a paper Bible usually stay on the shelf when you start reading on a phone. Cloud Bible can photograph a page and bring its highlights in, reading the photo on your phone and deleting it once you've checked what was found. Moving paper highlights into an app covers how that works.
It stays yours
No account is needed, notes are never sent anywhere or read by anyone but you, and a lifetime purchase keeps working even with no connection at all.
Questions
Is Cloud Bible free like YouVersion?
Partly. Reading is free in Cloud Bible, in every translation, with no limits. Highlighting, underlining, new notes and scanning your paper Bible need Cloud Bible+. YouVersion is free throughout, so if cost is the deciding factor, YouVersion wins.
Does Cloud Bible have the NIV or ESV?
No. Cloud Bible uses public-domain translations, which can be stored on your phone and read offline with no license: the Berean Standard Bible and King James Version are included, and the World English Bible, American Standard Version, Young's Literal Translation and Reina-Valera 1909 are free downloads. If you need the NIV, ESV or NLT, YouVersion carries them.
Can I move my YouVersion highlights into Cloud Bible?
Not directly. Cloud Bible can bring in highlights from a paper Bible by photographing the page, but it does not import from other apps.
Can I use both?
Yes, and plenty of people will. YouVersion for reading plans, audio and devotionals; Cloud Bible as the Bible you mark up and come back to.
Do I need an account for Cloud Bible?
No. An account is optional and only used to sync highlights and notes between devices. Everything works with no account and no connection.
